SANTO DOMINGO — The National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor) has announced the opening of two new provincial offices in San José de Ocoa and Hermanas Mirabal, expanding access to consumer complaint and assistance services throughout the Dominican Republic.

The announcement was made by Eddy Alcántara, the agency’s executive director, following the signing of cooperation agreements with Milciades Aneudy Ortiz Sajiun, senator for San José de Ocoa, and Lissette Nicasio de Adames, governor of Hermanas Mirabal Province. The agreements establish the framework needed to launch and operate the new offices.

Expanding Access to Consumer Protection

According to Alcántara, the expansion is part of Pro Consumidor’s strategy to strengthen consumer protection by making its services more accessible across the country. The new offices will allow residents to submit complaints, report consumer rights violations, and receive direct assistance without having to travel to larger cities.

The official said the initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to improving nationwide coverage while promoting greater protection for consumers in local markets for goods and services.

Nationwide Growth Continues

Alcántara noted that his administration has already opened 13 new offices in different provinces, with another office in Sánchez Ramírez Province scheduled to open next week. He reiterated the institution’s long-term objective of establishing a presence in every province of the Dominican Republic.

He also recalled that when he assumed leadership of Pro Consumidor, only 13 offices existed and nine of them operated with significant limitations. Since then, the agency has expanded its network to locations including Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, La Vega, Espaillat, Moca, Nagua, La Romana, as well as service points in Colinas Mall and Occidental Mall.

Local Leaders Welcome the Initiative

Senator Milciades Aneudy Ortiz Sajiun described the new San José de Ocoa office as a long-awaited development for the province. He said the facility will help monitor product quality, strengthen consumer protection, and contribute to public health. The senator also pledged support from his congressional office to assist the agency’s local operations.

Meanwhile, Lissette Nicasio de Adames, governor of Hermanas Mirabal Province, said the new office represents an important step toward decentralizing government services. She noted that bringing institutions closer to smaller provinces improves access to public services, creates local employment opportunities, and reinforces provincial efforts to protect consumers through technical support and oversight.

With the continued expansion of its regional network, Pro Consumidor aims to improve access to consumer rights services while strengthening oversight of the marketplace throughout the Dominican Republic.
