Samana Schools Face Deteriorating Conditions Before New School Year

Concerns over school infrastructure and staffing have triggered a protest in Samaná, where teachers, administrative employees and community representatives are demanding urgent action before the start of the 2026-2027 school year.

Participants in the demonstration denounced what they described as poor conditions at several educational facilities in the northeastern Dominican province, raising concerns about whether some schools are adequately prepared to receive students when classes begin.

Teachers Report Infrastructure Problems

Among the problems reported by protesters are collapsed roofs, severe leaks and unusable bathrooms. They also raised concerns about mobile classrooms that they described as being in unhealthy conditions.

The complaints come just 10 days before the scheduled start of the new academic period, increasing pressure on education authorities to address the reported deficiencies before students return to classrooms.

Staffing Shortages Also Raise Concerns

The protest was not limited to infrastructure. Participants also reported shortages of teachers in mathematics and physical education, along with a lack of school police officers.

The combination of facility problems and staffing shortages has become a central concern for educators and community members seeking adequate conditions for students and school personnel in the province.

Protesters called on the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic to provide an immediate response and address what they described as a state of abandonment in some schools.

With the 2026-2027 school year approaching, the demands place the condition of Samaná’s educational facilities and staffing levels under renewed scrutiny as families and schools prepare for the return to classes.
