San Francisco de Macoris Residents Protest Over Basic Services

Residents of Ensanche 27 de Febrero, including the La Javiela area of San Francisco de Macorís, took to the streets to protest what they described as worsening failures in basic public services.

The demonstration focused on three main complaints: a shortage of drinking water, the collapse of the local sewage system and the deteriorating condition of roads in the community. Protesters said the problems have affected daily life and accused authorities of failing to provide an adequate response.

The residents marched through several streets in the sector toward Frank Grullón Avenue, where they burned tires and threw debris as part of the protest. The action reflects growing frustration among community members who say previous efforts to seek solutions through dialogue have not produced results.

Residents Demand Action On Water And Sewage

Community leader Ramón Rodríguez, known as “Momón,” said the area is facing a difficult situation and that residents have already exhausted available channels of dialogue without receiving a satisfactory response.

The shortage of potable water was among the central concerns raised during the demonstration. Residents also pointed to the failure of the sewage system and damaged roads as problems requiring attention from the authorities responsible for public infrastructure and essential services.

Protesters specifically called for action from the National Institute of Potable Water and Sewerage (INAPA), the government institution responsible for water supply and sewerage services in the Dominican Republic.

Community Warns Of Further Protests

Rodríguez warned that residents would continue their protests if their demands are not addressed. The community leader said the residents intend to remain mobilized, particularly over the water service problems attributed to the area.

The demonstration highlights the practical challenges faced by residents when disruptions to water, sanitation and road infrastructure occur simultaneously. For communities in San Francisco de Macorís, reliable access to these services directly affects household conditions, mobility and public health.

Residents are now awaiting a response from the relevant authorities and say they will maintain pressure until concrete measures are taken to address the problems they have raised.
