Santo Domingo Metro Line 2C Begins Full Operation
The Santo Domingo Metro’s Line 2C will enter full operation on Monday, August 10, allowing passengers to travel continuously along the extension without transferring at María Montez after technical and operational testing was completed.
Line 2C of the Santo Domingo Metro will begin full operation on Monday, August 10, marking the end of the temporary transfer arrangement used during its testing phase. Passengers traveling along the extension will be able to remain on the same train instead of changing at María Montez.
The Empresa Metropolitana de Transporte (EMT) said the transition follows the successful completion of the technical and operational tests conducted during the system’s “marcha blanca,” or trial-operation period. The move places the extension into its full operating phase after months of progressive testing.
Transfer at María Montez Ends
One of the main changes for passengers is the elimination of the transfer previously required at María Montez station. Travelers using Line 2C will now be able to continue their journey without leaving one train to board another, simplifying the connection between the extension and the rest of Line 2.
The change is particularly relevant for residents who depend on the Metro for daily trips, as the end of the transfer removes an additional step from journeys through the western corridor of Santo Domingo. The extension serves the transportation needs of communities connected to the Metro network, making the continuity of service an important operational milestone.
Free Service Ends August 16
The free-service period associated with the trial phase will remain in place through Sunday, August 16. Beginning after that period, passengers will be required to pay the system’s regular fare.
The end of free service represents another transition from the testing stage to normal operations. During the marcha blanca, the system was being used both to evaluate its performance and to allow passengers to become familiar with the new service and its operating arrangements.
More Trains to Strengthen Capacity
The EMT also said that the progressive incorporation of additional railway units is part of a broader effort to strengthen the Metro’s operating capacity. However, the agency emphasized that the start of full Line 2C operations is tied specifically to the successful completion of the technical and operational validations carried out during the trial period.
For passengers, the change means that Line 2C will move beyond the temporary arrangements used during testing, with continuous journeys and regular fares becoming the standard operating model. The transition also provides a clearer indication of how the new extension will function as part of Santo Domingo’s wider urban transportation network.
