Gigantes End Losing Streak With 5-1 Win Over Tigres del Licey
The Gigantes del Cibao snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Tigres del Licey in a rain-shortened game in the Dominican Professional Baseball League, improving their record to 5-6.
The Gigantes del Cibao returned to winning form on Friday, defeating the Tigres del Licey 5-1 in a game shortened by rain during the Dominican Republic’s professional winter baseball season.
The victory ended a four-game losing streak for the Gigantes, who improved their record to 5-6 and moved into a tie with the Toros del Este for fourth place in the standings.
Licey, meanwhile, fell to 7-4, leaving them tied with the Leones del Escogido at the top of the standings.
Gigantes build early lead with five runs
The home team established control in the first two innings, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first before adding another in the second.
The opening rally featured consecutive hits by Carlos Jorge, Noelvi Marte and Marcell Ozuna. An infield error by Licey’s second baseman allowed Jorge and Marte to score, while another defensive mistake at third base brought home Ozuna and Carlos Peguero.
The Gigantes extended their advantage in the following inning. Jefferson Rojas and Pascanel Ferreras opened with consecutive singles, and another fielding error loaded the bases. Noelvi Marte then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Rojas for a 5-0 lead.
Licey scores once before rain stops play
The Tigres got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Ramón Hernández hit a double to left field, and Emilio Bonifacio reached base following an error by the second baseman, allowing Hernández to score and make it 5-1.
Rain interrupted the game during the bottom of the fifth, with no outs and one Gigantes runner on base. Play could not resume within the time allowed under the league’s regulations, and the game was called with the home team ahead.
The result therefore stood as a 5-1 victory for the Gigantes.
Ferreras leads Gigantes at the plate
Pascanel Ferreras recorded two hits to lead the Gigantes’ offense. Carlos Jorge, Noelvi Marte, Marcell Ozuna and Jefferson Rojas each contributed one hit.
For Licey, Ramón Hernández led the team’s offensive production with a double, while Gustavo Núñez and José Barrero each added a single.
Gigantes prepare for matchup against Toros del Este
The Gigantes are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, October 31, traveling to the Francisco A. Micheli Stadium in La Romana to face the Toros del Este in their third meeting of the season.
The matchup offers the team an opportunity to build on its latest victory against a direct rival in the standings as the Dominican winter baseball campaign continues.
The Dominican Professional Baseball League, commonly known as LIDOM, is the country’s premier winter baseball competition and features six teams competing for the national championship and a place in the Caribbean Series.
