The San Diego Padres secured their third consecutive postseason appearance with a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, continuing a notable run for the franchise. The win gave San Diego its 89th victory of the regular season against 70 defeats and confirmed another playoff appearance with the regular season approaching its conclusion.

Dominican outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and catcher Ethan Salas were central to the Padres’ decisive seventh-inning rally. Their hits helped produce three runs in the inning and gave San Diego the advantage it needed to hold off the Dodgers.

Padres extend historic postseason run

The qualification marks the Padres’ third consecutive postseason appearance, a significant achievement for an organization that has reached the playoffs five times in the last seven seasons. San Diego has established a sustained presence in the postseason after years in which playoff appearances were less frequent.

For Tatis Jr., the victory adds another postseason qualification to his MLB career. The Dominican remains one of the most prominent Dominican players in Major League Baseball, while the Padres continue to rely on a roster featuring several players with international backgrounds.

Dodgers threaten in the ninth inning

Los Angeles mounted a late challenge in the ninth inning when Shohei Ohtani hit a run-scoring double. The Dodgers, however, could not complete the comeback as Padres closer Mason Miller controlled the final moments and recorded his 38th save of the season.

Yuki Matsui earned the victory to move to 1-1. Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow was charged with the loss despite striking out 11 batters and working six innings without allowing a hit. The Padres eventually broke through against the Los Angeles pitching staff in the later innings.

National League postseason race takes shape

The Dodgers had already secured their division, while the Milwaukee Brewers had established an unreachable record among the National League’s division leaders and secured home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Padres’ qualification adds another established contender to the National League playoff field.

With only a few games remaining in the regular season, other postseason places were still being decided. In the American League West, Houston and Texas remained tied at 79-80, while in the National League, Philadelphia stood at 87-72 and Arizona at 85-74 in the race for the remaining playoff position.
