Dominican Republic Cruise Tourism Set for 38 September Calls

The Celebrity Beyond arrived at Taíno Bay Cruise Port on Tuesday carrying 3,224 passengers and 1,444 crew members, adding another major vessel to the Dominican Republic’s September cruise schedule.

The ship reached the Puerto Plata terminal at 7:46 a.m. after sailing from Miami and departed at 2:30 p.m. for Tortola. The visit was part of a broader month-long program that includes 38 scheduled cruise calls at ports and anchorages across the country.

A Busy September for Dominican Cruise Ports

Several international cruise operators are scheduled to call at Dominican ports during September. The program includes Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Virgin Voyages and Princess Cruises, giving travelers access to destinations on different parts of the country’s coastline.

Puerto Plata, La Romana and Cabo Rojo are among the destinations included in the schedule. The vessels expected during the month include Carnival Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, Norwegian Prima, MSC World America, Resilient Lady and Allure of the Seas.

The Regal Princess, operated by Princess Cruises, is also scheduled to visit Puerto Plata on September 14 and September 28, with both calls planned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What Cruise Visitors Can Expect

For international travelers, the distribution of calls across Puerto Plata, La Romana and Cabo Rojo highlights the range of cruise destinations available in the Dominican Republic. Each port provides access to different parts of the country, allowing passengers to spend several hours exploring local attractions before their ships continue to their next destination.

Puerto Plata, on the country’s northern coast, is one of the Dominican Republic’s established cruise destinations. La Romana serves the southeastern coast, while Cabo Rojo is located in the southwestern province of Pedernales, an area that has emerged as a newer focus of cruise infrastructure development.

The schedule also illustrates the role of cruise traffic within the country’s wider tourism industry. Unlike visitors staying in hotels, cruise passengers typically spend a limited number of hours at each destination, making port operations, transportation and shore excursions important parts of the visitor experience.

Authorities Seek to Expand Cruise Tourism

The Dominican Port Authority, known as Apordom, has identified the cruise sector as an area for continued development. Its executive director, Alejandro Campos, said the institution is working to strengthen terminals, attract additional cruise lines and increase the participation of local communities in the economic benefits generated by the industry.

“República Dominicana ha demostrado que tiene el potencial para consolidarse como un verdadero hub de cruceros del Caribe”, Campos said.

The strategy places port infrastructure and the expansion of cruise-line connections alongside efforts to ensure that communities near cruise destinations benefit from the activity. For travelers, continued investment in terminals can also shape the range of destinations and itineraries available in the country.

Apordom noted that cruise schedules, including arrival and departure times, remain subject to operational changes based on conditions affecting individual cruise lines.
