Antonio Guzmán Bridge Reopens In La Vega After Two Years

The Antonio Guzmán Bridge in La Vega reopened to traffic and pedestrians at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 13, following more than two years of closure that disrupted movement between sectors of the city. The reopening restores a direct crossing over the Camú River and returns an important local connection to regular use.

The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), the Dominican government agency responsible for the country’s public infrastructure and road network, said the new structure was completed as part of an intervention aimed at replacing the previous bridge and improving safety and connectivity.

A Key Connection Restored In La Vega

The bridge is located on Antonio Guzmán Avenue, an important route into La Vega, a city in the central Cibao region of the Dominican Republic. Its reopening allows both vehicles and pedestrians to use the crossing again, reducing the disruption caused by the prolonged closure.

The structure had been taken out of service in April 2024 after problems involving sinking at one of its approaches affected the bridge. The MOPC subsequently undertook work to replace the existing structure rather than simply return the damaged section to service.

New Structure Replaces Damaged Bridge

The project was presented by the MOPC as an infrastructure intervention focused on restoring safe passage across the Camú River. Earlier construction updates indicated that the replacement bridge was being built as a new structure after technical assessments of the previous one.

The reopening marks the end of a lengthy period in which residents and businesses in the surrounding area had to contend with changes to local mobility. The bridge’s return to service reestablishes a direct route between areas of La Vega and restores both vehicular and pedestrian connectivity.

For the public works authorities, completing the construction was only one part of the project. The ministry said the priority was to place the bridge into service while meeting the safety requirements expected of major road infrastructure.

The reopening also closes a significant chapter for a transportation link that had remained unavailable since 2024. With the new bridge now open, normal traffic can resume across this section of the Camú River while the replacement structure becomes part of La Vega’s road network.
