Jet Set Roof Collapse Trial Begins in Santo Domingo

The Jet Set nightclub roof collapse trial opened Friday in Santo Domingo, bringing Antonio and Maribel Espaillat before the court in the case stemming from the collapse of the nightclub’s roof. Relatives and supporters of the victims attended the hearing as the proceedings moved into the stage where evidence and arguments will be examined in determining the responsibilities of those accused.

María La Patriota, who attended in solidarity with Melba Grullón and other affected families, described the collapse as one of the country’s most serious tragedies and said the case should receive a forceful judicial response. She called for an exemplary sentence while expressing the view that negligence and insufficient attention to the building’s structural condition may have contributed to the disaster.

Her comments reflected the expectations surrounding the start of the trial, where the accusations against the Espaillat siblings will be examined through the evidence presented by the parties. The proceedings are expected to focus on establishing the facts and determining any legal responsibility supported by the evidence.

Prosecutor Links Collapse to Alleged Negligence

Wilson Camacho, the deputy prosecutor and director of prosecutions, also addressed the circumstances surrounding the collapse. In remarks cited during the opening of the proceedings, he argued that the disaster was connected to alleged negligence and pointed to the consequences for those affected.

“What happened at the Jet Set nightclub was due to the weight of negligence, which could overcome the capacity of its roof. People were injured, families were destroyed, dreams were cut short and life projects were disrupted,” Camacho said.

The prosecution’s position will now be tested during the trial, alongside the evidence and arguments presented by the defense. Allegations made by prosecutors or victims’ representatives do not by themselves establish criminal responsibility, which must be determined through the judicial process.
