Disney Cruise Line Makes Historic Debut in Puerto Plata
Disney Cruise Line made its first call in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday as the Disney Dream arrived at Puerto Plata's Taíno Bay terminal, marking a new chapter for the country's cruise tourism industry.
The Disney Dream made its first-ever call in the Dominican Republic on October 6, arriving at the Taíno Bay cruise terminal in Puerto Plata as Disney Cruise Line added the country to its Caribbean itineraries.
The ship arrived from Port Everglades, Florida, carrying 3,194 passengers and 1,467 crew members, according to figures reported following the visit. Its arrival made Puerto Plata the first Dominican destination to receive a Disney Cruise Line vessel.
A New Cruise Line for Puerto Plata
The inaugural call followed efforts that began in 2021 involving the Dominican Port Authority, the Ministry of Tourism and private-sector partners. Dominican Port Authority Executive Director Alejandro Campos said the joint work helped bring the Disney visit forward from dates initially expected later in the year.
The addition of Disney Cruise Line broadens Puerto Plata’s cruise tourism profile, particularly in the family-oriented segment. The city’s two cruise terminals, Taíno Bay and Amber Cove, already receive ships from several major international cruise companies.
According to the Dominican Port Authority, 43 cruise calls are scheduled across the country’s three cruise terminals during October, with an estimated 173,983 passengers. Taíno Bay is expected to receive 20 calls and 77,171 passengers, while Amber Cove is scheduled for 18 calls and 76,834 passengers.
Puerto Plata Strengthens Its Cruise Tourism Role
The Disney Dream’s visit also took place during a particularly active day for Puerto Plata’s cruise industry. The Norwegian Prima called at Taíno Bay, while Carnival Mardi Gras arrived at Amber Cove, bringing thousands of additional passengers and crew members to the province.
For visitors, Puerto Plata offers access to beaches, historic attractions and nature-based experiences along the Dominican Republic’s northern coast. The destination is known for attractions including the historic center, Mount Isabel de Torres and Playa Dorada.
The Disney Dream’s departure was marked by a fireworks display at Taíno Bay, providing a festive conclusion to the cruise line’s inaugural Dominican call.
Disney Cruise Line is expected to return to Puerto Plata later this month with the Disney Destiny, continuing the company’s presence in the Dominican Republic and further expanding the range of cruise brands serving the destination.
