Punta Cana MRO Center Begins Operations With JetBlue Aircraft
A JetBlue Airbus A320 has become the first aircraft to enter the new Punta Cana MRO Center, marking the start of operations at a facility designed to expand the Dominican Republic's role in regional aircraft maintenance.
The Dominican Republic has added a new capability to its aviation industry with the start of operations at the Punta Cana MRO Center, where a JetBlue Airbus A320 became the first aircraft to enter the facility.
The center, developed by Grupo Puntacana in partnership with FL Technics, an international aircraft maintenance provider, is located at Punta Cana International Airport and is intended to serve airlines operating across the Caribbean and the wider Americas. JetBlue’s aircraft also represents the facility’s first operational contract.
A New Aircraft Maintenance Hub In Punta Cana
The facility is designed to allow airlines to carry out specialized maintenance work in the Dominican Republic rather than sending aircraft to other markets. Its launch therefore adds an aviation service that can support carriers operating through one of the Caribbean’s busiest tourism gateways.
Located within the Punta Cana Free Trade Zone, the complex covers approximately 115,588 square meters, including about 27,000 square meters of construction. The first phase provides five maintenance positions for narrow-body aircraft, with additional expansion planned as operations develop.
The center is equipped to handle a range of aviation services, including scheduled inspections, base maintenance, component repairs and cabin modifications. These capabilities are intended to support airlines with maintenance requirements while reducing the need to move aircraft outside the region for certain types of work.
JetBlue Becomes The First Customer
The arrival of the JetBlue A320 marks the first operational use of the new facility and establishes the U.S. airline as its initial customer. The partnership gives the center an immediate connection to an airline with a substantial presence in the Caribbean and regular operations to the Dominican Republic.
For Punta Cana, the project extends the airport’s role beyond passenger traffic and into aviation-related services. The development of maintenance infrastructure can create additional opportunities around technical services, specialized employment and training while strengthening the airport’s broader business ecosystem.
Expansion Of Dominican Aviation Capabilities
The MRO center is expected to support the development of specialized aviation skills in the Dominican Republic. Aircraft maintenance requires technicians and other professionals trained to work under strict technical and safety standards, creating opportunities for higher-skilled employment and professional development.
The project also connects aviation services with the country’s tourism economy. Punta Cana is one of the Dominican Republic’s main international tourism destinations, and its airport handles large volumes of international traffic. Adding aircraft maintenance capabilities in the same location could strengthen the area’s position as a broader aviation and logistics center.
With five maintenance positions planned in the initial phase and additional expansion envisioned, the facility represents a longer-term effort to establish Punta Cana as a regional base for aircraft maintenance. Its development will determine how much of the maintenance demand from airlines operating in the Caribbean and the Americas can ultimately be handled within the Dominican Republic.
