Culture Minister Roberto Ángel Salcedo inaugurated the 14th edition of the Panamerican Food and Music Festival (PanamFest) in Toronto on Friday, as the Dominican Republic was recognized as this year’s guest of honor. The distinction places the country’s cultural identity, gastronomy, and artistic traditions at the forefront of one of Canada’s largest multicultural events celebrating the Americas.
Held through Sunday at Nathan Phillips Square, in front of Toronto City Hall, the festival provides an international platform for the Dominican Republic to showcase its heritage while strengthening ties with the Dominican community living in Canada.
Dominican Culture in the Spotlight
During the opening ceremony, Salcedo described the guest-of-honor designation as an important opportunity to promote the Dominican Republic’s cultural, artistic, and culinary traditions to international audiences. He also emphasized the event’s value in reinforcing connections with the Dominican diaspora in Canada.
Throughout the weekend, visitors can experience a broad display of Dominican culture, including performances of merengue and bachata, both recognized by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The program also features traditional handicrafts, larimar jewelry and decorative pieces, tourism exhibits, and a selection of iconic Dominican dishes such as mangú, sancocho, fried snacks with salami, and traditional desserts.
A Celebration of the Americas
Beyond the Dominican showcase, the festival brings together more than 600 artists representing countries across the Americas. Performances include salsa, cumbia, bachata, reggae, reggaeton, and traditional folk dances, reflecting the cultural diversity of the continent.
One of the event’s signature attractions is the World Food Cup, where more than 20 international chefs participate in live cooking competitions and public tastings. The festival also hosts the colorful Panamerican Parade, featuring flags, traditional costumes, and cultural groups celebrating the region’s diversity.
Another highlight is Panamerican Star, a talent showcase designed for children and teenagers under 17, offering young performers an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in music and dance.
A Festival That Promotes Multiculturalism
Founded in 2012 by Colombian cultural promoter Daniel García Herreros, the Panamerican Food and Music Festival was created to celebrate the diversity of the Hispanic and Pan-American diaspora in Ontario through a free platform for artists, culinary entrepreneurs, and community organizations.
Supported by volunteers, consulates, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations, the festival has grown into one of Toronto’s leading outdoor cultural events during the summer. It has also received recognition from the Government of Canada for promoting multiculturalism, inclusion, and community integration through arts and culture.
