The Puntacana Circular project has been launched to promote a circular economy model in the Dominican Republic, with a goal of recovering 2,000 tons of recyclable materials while encouraging sustainable waste management across local communities, businesses, schools and the tourism sector.

The initiative was presented with the participation of DO Sostenible, the Dominican Republic’s public-private trust for integrated solid waste management. The organization said the project reflects its commitment to advancing innovative solutions that improve the country’s waste management system and encourage more sustainable patterns of production, consumption and material recovery.

A Collaborative Circular Economy Initiative

The project is being led by the Puntacana Foundation and Parley Dominicana. It seeks to transform solid waste into opportunities for environmental, social and economic development through a collaborative approach that involves multiple sectors.

Príamo Ramírez, executive director of DO Sostenible, said initiatives that combine innovation, environmental education and community participation are essential to improving waste management practices in the country. He also emphasized the importance of cooperation among public institutions, private companies and international organizations to reduce environmental impacts while creating new opportunities for local communities.

$2.5 Million Investment to Support Sustainability

Puntacana Circular represents an investment of more than $2.5 million and will run for three years. Funding comes from the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) through the Advancing Circular Economy (ACE) facility, with additional support from the German government through the development agencies GIZ and KfW.

According to project organizers, recovering recyclable materials is expected to reduce waste sent to disposal sites while encouraging greater participation in recycling and environmental stewardship across the Punta Cana area, one of the Dominican Republic’s leading tourism destinations.

Strengthening Sustainable Waste Management

DO Sostenible said projects such as Puntacana Circular demonstrate how circular economy strategies can generate environmental, social and economic benefits simultaneously. The organization considers partnerships between government, the private sector and international institutions essential to accelerating sustainable development and improving long-term resource management in the Dominican Republic.
