Dominican Republic Issues Green Weather Alert for Three Areas
Authorities in the Dominican Republic have issued a green alert for Santo Domingo province, the National District and San Cristóbal as a tropical wave is expected to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds during the afternoon.
The Emergency Operations Center (COE), the Dominican Republic’s national emergency management agency, placed Santo Domingo province, the National District and San Cristóbal under a green alert Tuesday as a tropical wave moves across the country.
The weather system is expected to produce periods of moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms and wind gusts, with the largest rainfall totals forecast for San Cristóbal and Greater Santo Domingo. The conditions could create localized flooding and rapidly rising water levels in rivers, streams and drainage channels.
Rain Expected Across Several Provinces
The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET) said increased moisture associated with the winds and the tropical wave will produce growing cloud cover and rainfall during the afternoon. In addition to the three areas under alert, showers are expected in La Altagracia, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, La Romana, Monte Plata and San José de Ocoa, among other locations.
The concentration of heavier rainfall around the capital region is particularly relevant because Greater Santo Domingo includes densely populated urban areas where intense downpours can quickly overwhelm drainage systems. Residents in flood-prone communities are being urged to remain attentive to official instructions as conditions develop.
Authorities Warn of Flooding Risks
The COE said the green alert reflects the possibility of rising rivers, streams and drainage channels, as well as sudden and urban flooding. People living near waterways and drainage channels should take preventive measures and remain alert to changes in water levels.
Authorities also advised residents not to attempt to cross rivers, streams or drainage channels carrying large volumes of water. The COE recommended avoiding recreational swimming areas in the provinces under alert while the weather system affects the country.
Precautions Issued for Caribbean Coast
Marine conditions are also expected to require caution along part of the Caribbean coast. Off the southern and southwestern coast of Pedernales, small and fragile vessels have been advised to operate carefully near the coastline and avoid venturing offshore because of abnormal winds and waves.
The alert highlights the localized risks that can accompany tropical waves in the Dominican Republic, where intense rainfall can affect urban areas, waterways and coastal conditions within a relatively short period.
