Jet Set Nightclub Trial Opens Under Tight Security

Security was reinforced Friday morning at the Palace of Justice in Ciudad Nueva, Santo Domingo, as the court prepared to begin the trial against siblings Maribel and Antonio Espaillat in connection with the collapse of the Jet Set nightclub.

The case has drawn a large number of victims, attorneys and other participants, prompting authorities to expand the security arrangements used during the preliminary hearing. Proceedings were also moved to a larger courtroom to accommodate those involved in the case.

A Larger Courtroom for a High-Profile Case

The hearing was scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Palace of Justice, one of the Dominican Republic’s main judicial facilities in the capital. The expanded security presence reflects the scale of a case involving more than 200 deaths and a large number of victims and legal representatives.

Attorney Rodríguez Pavel Rodríguez said the trial could proceed Friday unless the court first issues a ruling on incidents raised by the Public Prosecutor’s Office that, according to him, had not yet been formally notified to the parties.

Rodríguez indicated that the proceedings are not expected to conclude in a single day. If the court moves forward, the case could advance through testimony from witnesses and the presentation of other evidence.

Victims’ Representatives Prepare for Proceedings

Plutarco Jáquez, an attorney representing victims, said he and his clients had been summoned and were prepared to participate in the hearing. His comments underscored the significant role that victims and their legal representatives are expected to play throughout the proceedings.

Jáquez also cautioned that the start of the trial could be affected if Antonio Espaillat’s defense raises an incident during the hearing. Any such procedural challenge would have to be addressed before the court could continue with the substantive phase of the case.

Trial Follows the Jet Set Disaster

The proceedings concern the collapse of the Jet Set nightclub, a tragedy that claimed the lives of more than 200 people. The case has moved from the preliminary stage into the trial phase, where the court is expected to examine testimony and other evidence concerning the disaster and the defendants’ alleged responsibility.

Friday’s hearing therefore marks a significant procedural step in a case that has drawn sustained attention in the Dominican Republic. The length of the trial will depend on the evidence presented and on any procedural issues raised by the parties as the proceedings continue.
