Francisco Lindor’s Grand Slam Leads Mets Past Yankees

Francisco Lindor powered a six-home-run attack as the Mets turned the second game of the Subway Series into a one-sided contest, beating the Yankees 12-2 before 46,864 fans in the Bronx.

The Puerto Rican shortstop supplied the biggest blow with a grand slam and finished with five RBIs, giving New York’s National League club the offensive spark it needed to even the two-game series against its crosstown rival.

Mets Overwhelm Yankees With Six Home Runs

Lindor was one of three Mets hitters to go deep against Yankees starter Gerrit Cole, who surrendered another barrage of power after being similarly punished in his previous outing. The Mets ultimately hit six home runs, with Luis Torrens, Carson Benge, Juan Soto and Jared Young joining Lindor in the home-run column.

Torrens added three RBIs, while Benge hit his 17th home run of the season, Soto connected for his 25th and Young hit his ninth. The production gave the Mets a commanding lead while keeping the Yankees from mounting a sustained response.

Cole, who fell to 8-9, allowed three of the Mets’ six homers. His latest difficult outing came shortly after his previous start against the San Diego Padres, when Fernando Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado hit consecutive home runs to open the game.

Thornton Gives Mets a Strong Start

The offensive explosion was backed by a quality performance from left-hander Zach Thornton, who improved to 4-5 after holding the Yankees to two runs over seven innings.

Thornton’s seven-inning effort allowed the Mets to maintain control throughout the game while their lineup continued adding to the lead. With the Yankees unable to close the gap, New York was able to complete the victory without needing to rely heavily on its bullpen.

The result leaves the Subway Series tied at one game apiece, setting up the next meeting between the neighboring New York clubs with neither side holding an advantage in the series.
