Coldest Places In The Dominican Republic
The coldest places in the Dominican Republic are found in the country’s highest mountain areas, particularly around Valle Nuevo, Constanza and the Central Mountain Range. While most of the country has a warm tropical climate, temperatures in these high-altitude areas can fall close to or below freezing during winter nights.
The Dominican Republic is better known for beaches and tropical temperatures, but its mountain regions can be surprisingly cold. The highest elevations of the Central Mountain Range contain the country’s coolest landscapes and some of its lowest recorded temperatures.
1. Valle Nuevo
Valle Nuevo, in the mountains south of Constanza, is widely recognized as one of the coldest areas in the Dominican Republic. The protected area reaches elevations of around 2,200 meters, and temperatures can fall below freezing during the coldest winter nights.
The country’s lowest officially reported temperature was recorded in Valle Nuevo: -3.5°C on March 2, 1959. The area known as La Nevera, near Las Pirámides, is particularly cold and can experience freezing conditions in the early morning.
2. Constanza
Constanza, in La Vega province, is the best-known cold-weather destination for travelers. At more than 1,200 meters above sea level, its climate is considerably cooler than that of the coastal regions. Official tourism information describes temperatures generally ranging from about 5°C to 20°C, with the coldest conditions occurring from November to February.
Constanza is also an important agricultural and ecotourism area, surrounded by mountains, pine forests, waterfalls and protected natural areas.
3. The High Valleys of the Central Mountain Range
Some of the highest valleys inside the Central Mountain Range can become extremely cold during winter. The Ministry of Environment has reported temperatures below 0°C in several high-altitude locations, with frost and freezing conditions occurring in elevated mountain areas.
Among the particularly cold areas are the Valle del Tetero, Valle de Bao and Macutico, located within the mountain landscapes associated with the national parks Armando Bermúdez and José del Carmen Ramírez.
4. Jarabacoa
Jarabacoa is not as cold as Valle Nuevo, but its elevation gives it a noticeably cooler climate than much of the Dominican Republic. The official tourism authority describes it as a mountain destination with temperatures generally around 16°C to 25°C.
Its cooler climate, rivers, waterfalls and mountainous surroundings have made Jarabacoa one of the country’s best-known destinations for mountain tourism and outdoor activities.
